The Story of the Renault Card Key

In all the inventions which have revolutionized the way we use cars but none has made such an impact on the lives of drivers as the hands-free card. Pascaline is the head of Cross-Cutting Products at Renault Group Products goes over the history of this tiny device.

The history behind the card

The hands-free card from Renault is a global success. It's now an integral element of the daily lives of car owners. The first time it was designed, in the year 2000 and is now one of the top innovations from the company. Pascaline, the Head of Cross-Cutting Products in the Products division will take you on a the journey of discovery to learn the history of this handy tool.

It was in 2001 that the Laguna II, a saloon aimed at embodying 'lifestyle' driving, came into production. It was an era of great innovation with an array of new features options that allowed customers to enjoy their vehicle to the maximum.

However, the occupants of these cars were still required to use their keys to open and close their doors. Renault engineers were determined that this was a major problem for many people.

As a result, they decided to include the use of a contactless keycard into their vehicles and create the system that would allow drivers to open and start their cars by merely waving the hand. The result is the key card, that is now found on two in three Renault vehicles. It's either located in the ignition barrel, or on the centre console the car will unlock when the card approaches and will lock automatically when moved away. This is an original Renault remote control card (without blade). It is supplied individually clam packed and ready to be programmed with Abrites diagnostics for Renault/ Dacia software with the ProTAG programmer.

The technology

Renault key cards are equipped with transponder chips as well as a low-frequency communication feature. This allows the card to communicate with your car. The chips are susceptible to cracking due to use and can be extremely expensive to get them repaired or replaced by a dealer. We can repair or replace your Renault key card for less than the dealer cost.

The hands-free card first appeared in 2001, in the Laguna II saloon.  renault captur key  was designed to be the ideal lifestyle car of the 21st century. But, despite a thorough design brief based on over 6,000 customer surveys that looked at their lifestyles, habits and expectations, Renault ran out of time to create prototypes and test every possible use-cases.

Luckily, the product lead on Laguna II, Bernard Dumondel was staying in a hotel at the time and was using his room key to unlock his car. He believed that a car key could be made using the same magnetic strip that was used to make the key.

In the years that followed, the card was hailed as a revolutionary technology and is now offered in two out of three Renault vehicles. Renault has decided to make use of the latest features of smartphones to enhance the hands-free card when it appears that they are about to replace it.

The keyless entry system

The hands-free cards of Renault were an innovation in technology at its launch 20 years ago. Its design is identical, but the technology inside has had some improvements to make it more user-friendly as well as harder to hack.

First of all, it cannot be used to unlock the doors or start the engine from outside the vehicle, unless it is activated by the driver. That's because radio signal antennas "around" the car are designed to determine whether the key is located outside or inside it. The key can still turn on the ignition from a distance but not unlock the doors. This is for your security.

The second is that the wireless remote control transmissions used by the system use a rolling-code. This lowers the likelihood of the security being breached by someone intercepting and retransmitting the control message in order to gain access but doesn't eliminate the possibility completely. [1]
